An opportunity has arisen in the Lettings Team for the role of Senior Occupational Therapist (Housing).

We are seeking to appoint an experienced, fully qualified Occupational Therapist who will work with tenants and prospective tenants who have complex and severe physical and/or mental health issues to ensure appropriate housing is sourced.

The role involves providing specialist advice and support to customers seeking rehousing. The client group will include but is not limited to both adults and children who may be wheelchair users, have degenerative and life limiting conditions, complex physical and mental health issues.

A sensitive and flexible approach to liaising with those in very difficult situations will be needed. You will need to understand the Council’s property stock within Gateshead and be able to match available properties to the needs of these clients. You will also be involved in the co-ordination and ordering of any follow up work to ensure complete suitability of housing including adaptations and equipment.

You will be working as part of specialist team therefore a positive work ethic and flexible, can-do attitude is important. There is a high workload of complex cases and it is essential that you have excellent organisational and time management skills.

You will need to be competent at documenting and presenting your cases in a variety of ways at a number of different forums, including meetings, panels and in the training environment.

Partnership working with a variety of professionals including but not limited to Gateshead Council’s Occupational Therapy Team, Social Workers and the NHS will be key in helping to deliver a joined up service for each individual.

You will also be involved in the assessment process and have an advisory role in the award of appropriate priorities for housing based on medical information.

You will be working alongside another Senior Occupational Therapist. You will be supported by an Occupational Therapy Assistant, and will provide professional guidance and support to that role.

You will adhere to the Code of Ethics and Professional Conduct Standards of the College of Occupational Therapists.

You will need to hold a Bachelor of Science honours degree in Occupational Therapy.
