Social Workers in School Initiative (SWIS)

Do you have a passion for social work? Are you an experienced and dynamic senior practitioner? Are you committed to providing excellent services to vulnerable children and families? Do you want to be part of an innovative new initiative?

If this is you - then Newcastle City Council is the place for you!

This is an exciting time to join us. As part of the DfE’s Social Workers in Schools Programme we are embedding social workers into some of our secondary schools to respond to concerns earlier and sustainably, improving the experiences and outcomes of children and their families. Through this programme we will work differently with vulnerable children and their families to safely reduce risk and support families to stay together.

As a school based social worker you will be embedded in a secondary school and will work closely with the existing Pastoral team to build relationships, develop ways of working and deepen understanding of safeguarding and child protection. You will carry statutory cases whilst retaining capacity to provide more help and support at the earliest opportunity to prevent escalation.

This school based role is initially funded for one year, however permanent opportunities within our child protection teams will be offered if the programme is not continued. As it is a school-based role you will be required to take your annual leave entitlements during school holidays.

Whilst you will be embedded within a secondary school, you will still be part of our service. In addition to regular supervision with your Social Workers in Schools team manager, our Centre of Excellence Lead will also facilitate group supervision for the Social Workers in Schools team to share concerns, good practice and to build and provide strong team support.

To support this ambitious initiative, we want Senior Practitioners who will bring a comprehensive knowledge and skill-base to varied and complex cases. You must be driven and ambitious, both for yourself and for the children and families you work with. An enthusiastic team player you must be able to use your initiative and champion improvements in practice. You must also be able to develop strong relationships with school colleagues and other partner agencies.

In return we will support you to succeed.

As an organisation we are committed to our staff receiving the opportunities they need to develop and flourish at all stages of their career. At Newcastle “social workers feel well supported” and practice improvement is delivered “creatively and innovatively” (Ofsted Focus Visit Outcome Letter 2019).

At Newcastle we offer a comprehensive range of training and professional opportunities that evolves and develops to meet the needs of our workforce at all stages of their career, all overseen and planned by our Centre of Excellence.

We will encourage you to be creative and progress your career making social work at Newcastle a profession that is yours to own. In addition, you will receive:
• A dedicated 5-day induction
• Generous annual leave in addition to Bank Holidays with the ability to buy additional leave annually
• A range of flexible working options
• A generous Flexi Scheme
• Access to Mindfulness sessions and other wellbeing initiatives
• Access to a generous, defined benefit pension scheme
• Access to a home electronics scheme and vehicle leasing scheme
