We are seeking to appoint qualified Social Worker Approved Mental Health Professionals (AMHPs) to provide assessment, care and support to residents of Gateshead. We have recently changed our way of working, as a result, the team consists of dedicated AMHP's, Assessing Officers, with support from a dedicated AMHP Development Officer, Senior Practitioner and Team Manager. As a result of the changes within the team and ways of working, we would welcome applications from either experienced or newly qualified AMHPs and also welcome applications from AMHPs with knowledge of learning disabilities or children and young people (though this is not essential). We offer a salary of up to GBP 37,858.

The role of the AMHP within Gateshead will focus on statutory duties under the Mental Health Act 1983;2007. We undertake assessments of both an urgent and planned nature on a rota basis, and you will be required to work flexibly. We also have the use of a private Ambulance Service to assist the AMHPs and uphold the dignity of service users subject to detention under the Mental Health Act. The team are also responsible for the management of those service users who are subject to s117 Aftercare, which includes discharge and care planning. We have working in partnership arrangements with health, housing and other partner agencies.


It is essential that you have up to date knowledge of the Mental Health Act 1983 (amended 2007) and its interface with the Mental Capacity Act 2005, Care Act 2014, Human Rights Act 1998 and Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards along with knowledge of case law and relevant Codes of Practice, as well as the ability to interpret this legislation and apply it to practice while adhering to the Local Authority's statutory responsibilities.

We have excellent legal update training and an opportunity to meet with regional AMHPs. Gateshead also has a dedicated AMHP forum and individual supervision is provided. Gateshead is committed to on-going training and development and quality improvement.

You will have effective written and verbal communication skills, IT skills, and be committed to equal opportunities, anti-oppressive practice and interagency working.

Required qualifications are Social Work qualification or equivalent i.e. MA or BA in Social Work, Dip SW CQSW or CSS with two years post-registration experience, qualified Nurse, Occupational Therapist or chartered Psychologist with the skills and experience specified in the regulations - this includes two years post-registration experience. It is essential is that you hold post graduate certificate as an Approved Mental Health Professional. We would expect you to have current practice experience in this specialist field of work and be approved by a local authority and registration with HCPC or other professional body. You will also have a current driving licence and access to a car or mobility support. Gateshead does offer the opportunity to use Co-wheels as an alternative to using your own vehicle. A commitment to continuous professional development and a willingness to undertake relevant training as required by the Local Authority, which may include training to become a Best Interest Assessor.

It is essential that you have the ability to analyse information and assess risk and levels of need in line with eligibility criteria and have experience of working with adults with mental health needs, learning disabilities and their carers. You must be able to manage and organise your workload including the ability to appropriately prioritise tasks and manage competing demands. You must have the ability to work a part of a team as well as the ability to use your own initiative. You must have experience of undertaking assessments and applying relevant criteria and where necessary identifying appropriate services to meet eligible needs. Experience of managing risk and being involved in the safeguarding process is also essential.
