An exciting and challenging opportunity has arisen for a qualified Social Worker, who is Best Interest Assessor qualified (under the Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards (DoLS)) to join the Newcastle DoLS team. The DoLS team is based in the Safeguarding Adults Unit at Shieldfield, Newcastle and will be managed by the Safeguarding Adults co-ordinator.

The post involves carrying out assessments as part of the DoLS process, providing advice to internal and external professionals, service users and their families and providing education and training to internal staff and managing authorities. You will also have the opportunity to carry out judicial deprivation of liberty assessments making applications to the Court of Protection.

This is a challenging role and you will need to be able to work autonomously, managing your own caseload and time whilst remaining flexible to service demands, seeking advice from colleagues and managers as appropriate. Working as an effective team member is essential.

The role is varied with the emphasis on working in collaboration with key partners to assess and engage with individuals, families and carers. There will also be an expectation that ongoing support and advice regarding the DoLS process will be provided to other directorates within the council and to partner and voluntary agencies. This will involve you taking part in awareness raising, training and education.

A commitment to supporting and assisting the development of colleagues is an important part of the role, along with a willingness to take on specific lead roles within the service.

You must have a relevant Social Work qualification such as a Degree in Social Work, DipSW, CQSW, CSS or equivalent and be additionally trained and active as a Best Interest Assessor.

Professional support, supervision and appraisal will be provided by a Safeguarding Adults Manager of the Safeguarding Adults Co-ordinator.

We are committed to protecting and promoting the welfare of children, young people and vulnerable adults and expect all staff to share this commitment. This post is working in regulated activity. If you are successful we will undertake additional recruitment checks which will include a check to see if you have had any criminal convictions, a check of police information and we will check the barred list(s). It is a criminal offence for a barred individual to apply for a job in regulated activity.

For an informal discussion, please contact Linda Gray or Brenda Ross on 0191 278 8156.

Apply online at www.northeastjobs.org.uk.

As this post involves working with children, vulnerable adults or dealing with sensitive information, written references will be taken up and made available to interviewers before the final selection stage; even if you indicate otherwise.
