The Children with Disabilities Team is part of the Special Educational Needs and Disabilities Service which was established in response to the Children and Families Act. Gateshead has been implementing the new reforms to develop Education, Health and Social Care Plans since September 2014 and has lead responsibility for statutory assessments for Education, Health and Care Plans.

The Team is responsible for the statutory service provision to disabled children and develops support plans for disabled children undertaking Child in Need Assessments as part of the statutory assessment process.

We are seeking to recruit an experienced social worker to join our highly effective team. You will join a group of highly effective and motivated staff to work in partnership with disabled children, their parents and external agencies to provide an effective service to minimise the effect of a child's disability.

It is essential that you have a relevant Social work qualification or equivalent (SW Degree, CQSW, Dip SW or CSS) and be registered with the HCPC. You must have knowledge of child development particularly with respect to the needs of the disabled child and have an understanding of the, Children's Act 1989, Equalities Act and the Human Rights Act. Experience of assessing children and their families, carer and family placements, report writing, presentation skills and be able to communicate effectively are also essential.

Knowledge of the Chronically Sick and Disabled Persons Act 1970 (section 2) and the recent SEND reform is desirable. As is experience of working with hearing, visual and multiple impairments; child protection and looked after children.
