Further Information
Social Worker – Out of Area Cases, UASC Team – Full-Time Permanent
An exciting opportunity has become available within the Unaccompanied Asylum-Seeking Children’s Team (UASC Team) as a Social Worker.
The Unaccompanied Asylum-Seeking Children’s Team (UASC Team) provide consistent specialist support, care and guidance for those young people who have come to Durham under the National Transfer Scheme or have spontaneously arrived in the area. The team supports both Children Looked After and Care Leavers.
Social Workers within the team support young people from several countries who wish to claim asylum within the UK. Whilst their claims are progressing, they are supported as Children Looked After within a local authority.
You will specifically work with young people who are placed out of the Durham area, mainly Birmingham and London. You will have the ability to work flexibly to ensure visits are undertaken within statutory timescales. There is an expectation that you would be willing to undertake overnight stays in some circumstances or travel late. You would be eligible for flexitime and allowances needed for travel. We value employees work life balance and will support you to ensure there is a structure and plan in respect of your role.
What is involved?
- As a social worker with the UASC team, you will communicate clearly and sensitively, building effective relationships with children, young people and other professionals.
- You will take a curious approach to young people’s backgrounds, cultures and lived experience.
- You will develop a sound knowledge of the asylum process and legislation that supports this.
- Make realistic, child centred, plans within a review timeline, which will manage and reduce identified risks and meet the needs of the child. Ensure that children, young people and families, and partner agencies participate fully.
- Produce well argued, focused, and jargon free case notes, plans and reports e.g. single assessments and court reports. Present a clear analysis and a sound rationale for actions and conclusions.
- Evaluate and review the development and progress of children, young people and their families against the agreed plan, monitor their changing needs and evaluate impact. Amend plans as and when necessary.
We encourage you to contact Nathan Head via email at nathan.head2@durham.gov.uk to arrange an informal discussion about the role.
What will I need?
- Degree in social work or equivalent social work qualification, e.g. Post Graduate Diploma in Social Work (PDDipSW) Certificate of Qualification in Social Work (CQSW), Diploma in Social Work (DipSW), Certificate in Social Services (CSS)
- Current Social Work England Registration
- Successful completion of the Assessed and Supported Year in Employment (ASYE)
