We are looking for skilled and experienced social workers and managers who have the passion and drive to ensure that children and young people in Sunderland achieve the best outcomes and receive high quality services.
Over the last 12 months there has been sustained and significant improvement in the quality of services delivered to children young people and their families. Improvement is being rigorously monitored through a multi-agency board and we consult with staff regarding the developments and change that effect front line practice.
A priority is to recruit and retain a skilled, supported and confident social care workforce and to do this we
• Work in small teams made up of a Team Manager, an Advanced Practitioner and no more than 7 social workers
• Have a commitment to maintain caseloads at an average of 20 per worker
• Four day working week available
• Provide laptops and mobile phones to every social worker to make mobile and flexible working easier
• Have introduced a career progression scheme which is underpinned by a professional learning and development plan
• Are planning a Professional Leadership Programme for new Managers and Advanced Practitioners
• Make sure that all social workers and managers receive regular, high quality supervision

Sunderland Childrens Social Care has the following structure:
A central Integrated Contact and Referral Team made up of social care, police and health professionals
4 Assessment Teams who undertake Single Assessments and Child Protection Investigations.
11 Safeguarding Teams based in 5 localities (South - Hendon, West – Thorney Close, North – Bunnyhill, Coalfields – Hendon, Washington) responsible for Child in Need, Child Protection and Children Looked After
2 city wide Permanence Teams responsible for Children Looked After
2 city wide Next Steps Team responsible for care leavers
1 city wide Adoption Team.
There are vacancies for social workers in all teams except Fostering.

Please note all applicants must have successfully completed Assessed and Supported Year in Employment (ASYE). A separate recruitment process is in place for newly qualified social workers which takes place in the spring.

There are vacancies for Team Managers in Assessment, Locality Safeguarding, Permanence and the Next Steps teams.

Applicants for Team Manager posts must have substantial post qualifying experience of statutory social work with children and families and must demonstrate the necessary leadership in driving good practice and the management skills to create an environment where social workers can excel.

Work is currently underway to establish a company (Together for Children – Sunderland) to deliver Children’s Services functions on behalf of the council and it is expected that the company will operate independently by April 2017. This post and the post-holder will transfer to the company from that date. Individuals who start after 1st April 2017 will commence their employment with the Together for Children. Terms of conditions of employment will not be effected.
