Further Information
Here in Sunderland we are diversifying how we help and support people who become homeless. We have realigned the Housing Options Team to ensure the team is well placed to meet the needs of all people who are street homeless and those threatened with homelessness. We will work to ensure that all move to and sustain independent living.

For many this journey is not a straight line, therefore we have increased the team and have added more diverse roles to ensure people are supported at every stage of their journey to a safe and secure home. You will note we are recruiting into many new posts and this is a great time to join a cohesive team who always support each other.

If you have a passion for working hard and helping people, then we encourage you to come and talk to us at City Hall on 10th August 22, Committee Room 1 between 2pm-4pm.

I’m sure you will be inspired by our passion and see that we have shaped a great team structure which will help homeless clients to move on with their lives, as well as being equipped to sustain a safe home.

The Council has developed a refreshed approach to tacking homelessness via a Homeless Journey, which aims to provide people with support and accommodation to support them ‘from the street to independent living’.

We a looking to recruit a permanent post for a Temporary Accommodation Officer within a busy Housing Options Team to assist in the delivery of preventing homelessness. The role will contribute to the provision of suitable temporary accommodation for those who require it as defined within the Housing Act 1996, Part VII.

You will be responsible for placements into council led and other Temporary Accommodation (TA) working with homeless households who are accommodated. The successful applicant will also be responsible for creating and maintaining partnerships with providers of temporary accommodation to ensure that the necessary level of accommodation is available. You will develop robust support plans and deliver these to households in temporary accommodation to facilitate move on to settled accommodation. You will work closely with Homelessness Reduction Officers and Tenancy Sustainment Officers to assist with the assessment of homeless applicants and move on.

You will be the first point of contact with households residing in temporary accommodation in all matters relating to the offer of a property to those customers with more complex needs to ensure tenancy sustainment (e.g. Housing Benefit advice, financial capability and support etc. and to actively involve the Housing Service to ensure all relevant information and support is in place to sustain the tenancy at signup).

Applicants should have a passion and experience of working within a housing, homelessness or support related service, have a good understanding of the Homeless Reduction Act 2017 and have experience of supporting vulnerable people, enabling a move to independent living.

Applicants should have experience of creating partnerships with providers of temporary accommodation and private landlords with a good track record of delivering effective solutions for homeless people particularly regarding the use of temporary accommodation.
