Northumberland is one of the largest counties in England Northumberland County Council is seeking to appoint to a key post within Northumberland Fire and Rescue Service. The post holder will be part of the senior management team to support the delivery of our ambitious plans to ensure that we really are a “council that works for everyone” and to focus on delivering an ambitious improvement programme following our latest HMICFRS inspection report.

The Role
To manage, develop and implement Protection strategies and services that support the strategic vision and business objectives of Northumberland Fire and Rescue Service and support the Chief Fire Officer and the wider senior leadership team of both the Council and the Fire and Rescue Service. Northumberland is a unique county with an opportunity for the Fire and Rescue Service to truly be positioned to contribute to the developing commercial sector within the county. Given the unique investment in Northumberland the post holder will have the opportunity to oversee the statutory consultations on the first Giga factory to be built in the United Kingdom, as well as the recommissioning of the Northumberland Train line. This is an exciting time for Northumberland Fire and Rescue Service as we develop the wider partnership offering to support our communities across the county.

The postholder will deliver rostered operational emergency response and Duty Manager cover as part of the Flexible Duty Officer Group in NFRS.

The postholder will manage a team of 12 personnel to ensure the delivery of a revitalised approach to inspection and regulation within the county, as well as the forensic investigation of fires, with a focus on developing and sustaining a Protection Department within Northumberland Fire and Rescue Service of the highest standard for the communities of Northumberland.

The successful candidate, as directed by the Chief Fire Officer, will strategically lead and direct the Protection department within the Fire & Rescue Service to promote the support and development of staff through appraisal, mentoring, training and development programmes. The successful candidate will also promote and maintain a positive relationship with all employees and their respective trade unions in the interests of developing a climate of harmonious and constructive employee relations. This role will also be pivotable in the delivery of the excellent collaborative working which exists across the North East Fire and Rescue Services.

With interpersonal, strategic and innovative skills, this role will lead on the quality, inspection and regulation of Northumberland’s Fire and Rescue Service’s Protection Department, whilst supporting a positive and innovative organisational culture through genuine staff engagement.

You will have previous experience of Protection duties within a Fire and Rescue Service at Station/ Group Manager level. Operational experience is also necessary as being part of the Duty Manager team you will need to have proven experience of safely commanding operational incidents and have attained the relevant accreditation (e.g. ICL2 or 3).

Working closely with the Regional Protection Teams and Northumberland County Council Public Protection Teams, the successful postholder will be able to demonstrate an ability to build effective partnerships and facilitate engagement to deliver inclusive partnerships across the service and Region, involving stakeholders in building a vision for the future of Protection within Northumberland Fire and Rescue Service.

We are offering a salary range of £47,887 to £53,086 depending upon experience and Officers working on the the flexible duty system shall be paid a pensionable supplement of 20% of their basic pay.
