Further Information
Stockton Council are investing in children’s social work so that we can offer the very best service to children and families in our Borough.

As part of this investment we are creating an academy for Newly Qualified Social Workers (NQSWs) which will provide focused support, a protected workload and the opportunity to experience Social Work across the full spectrum of Children’s Services.

If you’ve just finished your Social Work course or you are about to, we would love for you to consider applying to join our new academy to complete your Assessed and Supported Year in Employment (ASYE).

We’ve just recently recruited a Team Manager and Senior Practitioner who are all set to provide great leadership in the new academy.

We have also just been successful in securing some additional funding to allow us to offer some more opportunities for new social workers within the academy.

If you join us this year, you’ll be a founder member of our academy. We want the voice of our Newly Qualified Social Workers to be at the centre of the academy and the ASYE.

You’ll receive professional development and support throughout your ASYE. This will include regular supervision which includes time for critical reflection, protected development time (equating to half a day per week) and a reduced workload allocation.

There will be plenty of professional development opportunities based on your own identified needs and areas of interest. A key foundation of our academy will be the breadth of experience that you get, with the opportunity to spend time in all parts of our service.

Ultimately we want you to develop high standards of practice so that you can deliver positive outcomes for children, young people and their families.

On successful completion of your ASYE, in recognition of your move from NQSW to Social Worker, you’ll also be awarded your next career grade.

Stockton on Tees Borough Council was a finalist in the category of ‘Supportive Social Work Employer’ in the Social Worker of the Year Awards 2022.

As well as an experienced and enthusiastic team of Social Workers, Stockton also has a great Help and Support offer with close links between social work teams, family work teams and the youth service. We have a well regarded Family Group Conference team, family workers with expertise in parenting assessments and the Graded Care Profile as well as a partnership with Family Action who supervise family time.

We are embedding relationship-based practice as the bedrock of our practice model. Our social workers have told us that this is how they want to practice and it is a model that is informing the work of the whole of Children’s Services with relationships at the heart of everything we do.

Given the importance of relationships, it is vital that social workers feel supported and safe in the incredibly challenging job that they do. We have excellent team managers who bring a wealth of experience and knowledge and offer regular high quality reflective supervision and a safe space for discussion.

If you would like an informal chat about our new academy or being a NQSW in Stockton, please contact Jon Doyle, Service Lead Children and Families Social Care on 01642 524592 or jon.doyle@stockton.gov.uk
