Support and inspire change to make a difference for children and families in South Tyneside.

South Tyneside received the number 1 regional ranking by overall score in the Social Work Health Check survey (2020).

In South Tyneside, our children and families are at the forefront of everything we do. We want every child and family to feel supported in times of need and empowered to make the right decisions; we are committed to making a difference. We take pride in our teams in Children’s Services, where staff are valued, supported, and trusted to drive this vision forward.

We are excited to offer this opportunity to join our renowned Participation & Engagement Team and contribute to the development of this exciting service that ensures children and young people are listened to and involved in their lives and the decisions that affect them.

As someone with knowledge and experience of children who are cared for and care leavers, you will lead on the development and delivery or our Care Leaver Engagement Programme, support groups within our Children in Care Council portfolio, and contribute to a new area of work to increase the volume and visibility of children and young people with SEND.

As someone with knowledge and experience of engagement work with children and young people, you will bring enthusiasm, creativity, and a strong track record of supporting children to have their voices heard. We are looking for experience within SEND as this role will lead on a new area of work to increase the volume and visibility of children and young people with SEND. Experience and knowledge of cared for children and care leavers will also be important for successful candidates.

As a Participation & Engagement Officer in South Tyneside, you will:
• Be supported to develop and deliver an engagement programme that captures the voice of children and young people with SEND across the borough
• Lead and support regular groupwork activity with children and young people
• Be encouraged to bring a creative and innovative approach to the role and the methods of engagement with children and young people
• Work flexibly, including regular evening activities and occasional weekends
• Access a broad range of training and development, both formal and informal

Employee Benefits

As a valued member of South Tyneside Council, you will also have access to our excellent benefits package, including:
• Membership of the Local Government Pension Scheme.
• A flexible hybrid working model, with a blend of office and home working.
• A generous 25 days annual leave entitlement.
• Use of the flexi system.
• Sick pay entitlement, which increases with length of service.
• Our ‘stuck not sick policy’ recognising that employees, on occasion, may need to take time away from the office. It enables employees to agree how time will be repaid with managers, rather than taking sick leave.
• Our lease car staff benefit scheme is a cost-effective way to lease a brand-new car via salary sacrifice with no deposit or credit checks.
• Our home technology staff benefit scheme is a home electronics salary sacrifice scheme which allows you to save money on home technology and spread the cost, with no deposits or hidden payments.

South Tyneside Council is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children, young people and vulnerable adults.
