Great social workers change lives
In the North East we want to grow, attract and retain the best social workers

We are 12 local authorities in the North East of England offering exciting, challenging and rewarding opportunities for social workers at all stages of their career. Whether you’re starting out or stepping up, there’s an opportunity for you to really make your mark. We want to grow, attract and retain the best social workers who can build relationships with our children, families and vulnerable adults and help them transform their lives, whilst providing you with support, supervision and the opportunity to succeed in a rewarding and fulfilling career.
There is a strong commitment to high-quality social work education and training. Through our Teaching Partnership and national programmes such as Frontline, Step Up to Social Work and Think Ahead we are working together to ensure the social workers of tomorrow have the skills and attributes they need to really make a difference in our communities.
When you work for us we will support you in your role with regular supervision. We offer opportunities for career development though the Firstline programme for first line managers and access to high quality specialist training and CPD for experienced social workers, senior practitioners and team managers and because we want to keep the most talented professionals in the North East, if you are an experienced social worker looking to progress your career, we will support you with leadership programmes to help you realise your potential.
“The Assessed and Supported Year in Employment (ASYE) provides the newly qualified practitioner with the support they need while promoting development. I am now two years post qualified and would never think of working anywhere else. Practicing as a social worker is rewarding; it is at times stressful, but living in the North East and working in my authority makes all the difference.” Strengthening and Supporting Families Social Worker
“I joined as a Newly-Qualified Social Worker and progressed to Team Manager. My line manager supported me during that process through training and progression. Everybody knows everybody in my authority, so the communication is very good. The people I've worked with for a long time are very motivated to make our service the best it can be.” Team Manager, Children’s Services
I work in an authority which values staff and has offered me numerous opportunities for career development. I have worked as a front line social worker in children’s services, specialist social work roles, development and project work, team manager, service manager in adult services and now Principal Social Worker. The training opportunities are varied and excellent quality. I wouldn’t work anywhere else! Principal Social Worker, Adult & Children’s Services
“I live in a vibrant city with a diverse and varied community that offers new and developing opportunities to work children and families in holistic way. My authority is dedicated to ensuring that families receive the best services through a variety of innovative approaches and services. We are a friendly and exciting city that not only provides a number of opportunities to work creatively with families, but also to enjoy the shopping, food and social culture for those evenings and weekends.” Senior Practitioner Initial Response Service, Children’s Social Care
