Now is an exciting time to join our rapidly growing Trading Standards team in Sunderland City Council. We are working hard on our commitment to deliver a modern consumer protection service that focuses on using resources in an efficient and targeted way. We are striving to ensure Sunderland is a compliant and safe place in which to live, work, visit and do business. As part of this, we are looking for a keen and forward-thinking individual to fill the role of Senior Consumer Protection Officer.

The successful applicant will have a positive ‘can do’ attitude and demonstrable experience of criminal law enforcement in a comparable public sector organisation. They will have the personal skills needed for successful proactive engagement with businesses, consumers and partner agencies and able to work on their own initiative as well as part of a team. Experience in conducting investigations and compiling prosecution reports is expected and a solid understanding of the regulatory framework that Trading Standards must operate within (e.g RIPA, PACE and CPIA) is advantageous.

This post will focus heavily on delivery of a project relating to alcohol and tobacco legislation in conjunction with partner agencies. This will include working closely with retailers across the City to promote ‘responsible retailing’ as well as enforcing non-compliance. Some work outside of office hours in the night time economy will be essential.

Other duties will include the full range of Trading Standards work in the areas of fair trading, product safety and animal health.

This post is exempt from the rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974 and will be subject to a DBS check from the Disclosure and Barring Service.
