Northumberland County Council is a progressive local authority supported by an experienced and talented Legal Services Unit with high standards in the provision of timely, accurate and quality legal advice.
This post is to cover a period of maternity leave.

The Legal Services Unit seeks to recruit an experienced and knowledgeable lawyer. You will be expected to have a good understanding and experience of the law and procedure relating to Housing and also to civil and criminal litigation, although the majority of the work will be housing related. You will work with Housing officers to tackle problems of anti-social behaviour and other tenancy related problems and advise on the full range of civil and criminal litigation matters, and attending County and magistrates court when appropriate. You will also be expected to contribute from time to time to other regulatory areas of work as and when needed. You will have experience of conducting contested advocacy.

A qualified solicitor or barrister or fellow of the Institute of Legal Executives holding a current practising certificate, you will bring plenty of in-depth knowledge in the areas of Housing and Litigation as well as at least a good understanding of general regulatory matters and will be responsible for drafting proceedings in the County Court and Magistrates Court. With relevant experience in these areas, you will advise and communicate with in-house clients and elected members on a range of complex matters. You will have an eye for detail and good organisational skills, which will enable you to carry a substantial workload.
Flexible and innovative in your approach, you will help us to positively develop new areas of practice. You will offer your first-class legal advice to colleagues, committees and working groups as well as outside bodies where appropriate.

A valid driving licence and car are essential (reasonable adjustments may be possible according to the Equality Act).
