Further Information
We are seeking to appoint an experienced, Approved Mental Health Professional (AMHP) in the Mental Health Team.

We have recently redesigned our model regarding how Gateshead's AMHP service responds to referrals for MHA work and now operate a dedicated core AMHP team model.

The core AMHP team is part of the overall Mental Health team and consists of dedicated core AMHPs who will receive support from the AMHP Lead, Senior Practitioner and Team Manager. Core team AMHPs will undertake MHA assessments, carry a reduced caseload, support less experienced staff and be prepared to complete the Practice Educator training. The core AMHPs work 3 x 12 hour shifts (8 am - 8 pm) per week Monday to Friday.

An important role within the core team is that of the AMHP Coordinator. This role is shared between members of the core AMHP team. The Coordinator will screen referrals to establish the appropriate action. You must therefore, be confident, have excellent leadership and communication skills, be a good team player but be able to act on your own initiative. Flexibility and teamwork is crucial to meet the demands of this small team.

It is essential that you have up to date knowledge of relevant legislation including the Mental Health Act 1983 (2007) and its interface with the Mental Capacity Act 2005, Care Act 2014, Human Rights Act 1998 and Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards along with knowledge of case law and relevant Codes of Practice.

You must also have the ability to interpret this legislation and apply it to practice while adhering to the Local Authority's statutory responsibilities.

It is essential that you have the ability to analyse information, assess risk and levels of need in line with eligibility criteria and have experience of working with adults with mental health needs and their carers. You will have experience of undertaking assessments and applying relevant criteria and where necessary identifying appropriate services to meet eligible needs.

You must be able to manage and organise your workload by prioritising tasks whilst managing competing demands.

You will also be able to demonstrate your experience of managing risk and being involved in the safeguarding process.

As an AMHP you will have excellent communication and IT skills, be committed to equal opportunities, anti-oppressive practice and interagency working.

It is essential you have a Social Work qualification or equivalent i.e. MA or BA in Social Work, Dip SW CQSW or CSS, with 2 years post registration experience or be a qualified Nurse, Occupational Therapist or chartered Psychologist with the skills and experience specified in the regulations – this includes two years post-registration experience.

You must hold a post graduate certificate as an Approved Mental Health Professional or willing to undertake the necessary training within 12 months of appointment leading to the AMHP qualification. We would expect you to be able to demonstrate a breadth of current practice experience in this specialist field of work and be registered with HCPC.

You must have a commitment to continuous professional development and have a willingness to undertake relevant training as required by the Local Authority.

If successful you will have to apply for an enhanced Disclosure.
