Headteacher: E Patterson.

37 hours per week, term time only plus 11 on call days during school closure as confirmed by the school.

Required for September 2021 or as soon as possible thereafter.

St Mary’s is a very popular and happy school, rated Outstanding by the Diocese and Ofsted. We became an academy in 2013 and enjoy outstanding facilities in a new building, which opened in 2011. We joined the Bishop Bewick Catholic Education Trust in June 2020. We are also very popular with parents and are one of the most over-subscribed schools in the North-East. We have around 1,200 students in the main school and our Sixth Form, of over 200, is expected to grow to 300 in the next three years. This is a wonderful opportunity to join a highly successful and forward thinking school.

Our thriving and successful school places central importance on the development of the spiritual lives of our students and staff, whatever their Faith background. We aim to nurture and support all in our school community on their spiritual journey. In our last Diocesan Inspection St Mary’s was, once again, graded as Outstanding in all areas. The Inspectors concluded that “St Mary’s is a beacon of excellence, a light for all to see.” The Chaplain plays a vital role in this work and, consequently, this is a key appointment for the school.

The person appointed to the role of Chaplain at St Mary’s will therefore be able to build on established ways of working. Chaplaincy, for us, requires a team approach and the Chaplain will need to be able to lead, with confidence, a team of talented staff and students who form our Chaplaincy team and to provide a rich and varied experience for our community. Empowering as many students as possible to become actively engaged in the spiritual life of the school, is also a key focus of this job.

Applicants should be committed, practising Catholics with the personal attributes and professional skills required to carry out this role effectively. The ability to form excellent working relationships with all students and staff is an essential requirement. Hard work, enthusiasm, creativity and a genuine passion for supporting young people on their spiritual journey are all pre-requisites of the job.

In return, we offer an excellent working environment in a school graded Outstanding by the Diocese and Ofsted. The person appointed can expect unstinting support from the Headteacher, the Senior Leadership Team and all other staff, as well as from our excellent students. Full training will be offered to anyone new to Chaplaincy work. On-going, high quality professional development and support will also be provided internally and via the well-established Diocesan network of School Chaplains.

If you require any further information about the post, please do not hesitate to contact Rachael Blackburn, Assistant Headteacher on 0191 215 3260.

Application packs are available to download from our school website, or by e-mailing the Director of Finance and Support Services, louise.douds@st-marys.newcastle.sch.uk.

Closing date: 9.00am on Friday 23rd July, 2021. Your completed application form, letter and reference consent form should be returned, marked for the attention of Louise Douds, Director of Finance & Support Services by this date. Interviews will take place at the start of the new academic year, in September.

The school is fully committed to safeguarding and the welfare of children and young people. This post is subject to an enhanced DBS check.
