Gateshead Council has developed a Private Funeral Director Service (Regent Funeral Services). This is an exciting new development which requires practical hands on care for the deceased of all ages and circumstances calls for high levels of empathy, compassion and understanding. Working alongside the deceased and their grieving relatives at times of high pressure and emotion isn't for everyone so demands a special type of person to apply. We are therefore looking Funeral Service Operatives to be available as and when required.

The role is:

A Casual position, As and when required
Flexible working hours, day and night and help cover a 365/24-hour days.
You can be called into work at any time but as much notice given as possible.
Looking for someone long term, flexible and committed.
Up to date vaccinations. Preferable to have had a Hepatitis B Vaccination.
Physically fit and capable of handling heavy loads.
What will be required of you?

The role holder will take pride in their appearance, act with empathy, compassion and professionalism at all times.

The main points of the job role are, but this list is not exhaustive:

Driving ceremonial vehicles, bearing coffins, and working as part of a team to ensure the smooth running of every funeral.
Bringing the deceased into our care and looking after them until the day of the funeral.
Assist with coffin deliveries and fitting.
Cleaning company vehicles in line with company policies and procedures.
Ensuring the mortuary and workshop areas remain clean and tidy at all times.
Assisting bereaved families in a sensitive and calming manner.
Handling and recording of personal effects.
What do you need to demonstrate in this role?

The successful applicant must be able to maintain the highest levels of standards every step of the way. As an ambassador of the business you will lead by example, ensuring that the company's policies and practices are met and exceeded.

A practical can-do attitude combined with a caring nature and emotional maturity.
Physical fitness - you'll be lifting coffins and carrying the deceased in a variety of environments and situations.
Attention to detail.
The ability to adhere to strict 'identification of the deceased' procedures.
The focus and attention to accurately carry out detailed instructions and complete tasks to agreed timescales.
The ability to work alone and the flexibility to be part of an 'up to 24 hours on-call' team, 365 days per year.
A full driving licence.
Initially we are looking for cover during the day, which could be up to 37 hours per week, attending to funerals as and when required. A specific number of hours at this stage can't be guaranteed.


There is also the possibility of providing cover on the out of hour's service if required. This will entail taking calls from customers in relation to the funeral service and visiting customers who require deceased family members to be transported into our care in the evenings or at weekends. This will be a standby arrangement where you will be required to be contactable at all times by telephone and to attend customers as required.

Workwear appropriate to the service will be provided once passed probationary period. You will have access to a mobile phone whilst on call during the evenings and weekends. Appropriate vehicles will be provided for visits to customers and collecting the deceased.

If you are required to work on the evening rota, this will consist of working in pairs, covering the out of hours service requirements as identified below:

Monday to Friday 08:00 - 17:00hrs (Dayshift)

Monday to Friday 17:00- 08:00hrs (Call out)

Saturday 08:00am through to 08:00am Monday morning (Call Out) All weekend

You will be paid £166.37 per week (7 days) for being on the call out rota, however, there is also the option of being on the call out rota Monday to Friday only or Saturday and Sunday only, which can be discussed at interview. Any other duties carried out during the day will be paid at Grade E.
