The post will be part of a five-person rota working a 365 day / 12-hour shift rota system which is inclusive of nights, weekends and public holiday working.

Owned by Sunderland City Council, the Port of Sunderland, offers the provision of port services and infrastructure to a range of market sectors which includes: bulk; project/unitised cargo handling; ship repair and marine engineering; North Sea oil and gas industry support and offshore renewable energy and subsea engineering. The rail-connected Port estate is increasingly recognized as a location of choice for third-party inward investment that will further support the growth in these markets.

As part of the Port’s continuing development, we are now seeking to recruit two Local Port Service (LPS) officers to join the team. As part of this role, you will be required to deliver services within the Port of Sunderland with particular emphasis on providing a 24-hour port information service that will ensure a good service delivery to port customers, information exchange with parties operating in the port environment, safe navigation and responding appropriately to emergency situations. You may also be required to undertake other marine and non-marine services commensurate with training, experience, and qualifications.

To be considered for this role, you must be the holder of the following in date qualifications/certification OR recognized equivalents:
• Marine Radio Short Range Certificate (SRC) or Restricted Certificate of Competence in Radiotelephone, (VHF only)
• Holder of a Local Port Service operator qualification or IALA V103/1(Operator) qualification
• Possession of full UK driving licence

and have demonstrated experience of working in a maritime and/or port environment, ideally in a Local Port Services (LPS) or Vessel Traffic Services (VTS) function and have technical expertise in the operation of LPS aids including radar/AIS, tide gauges, CCTV, UHF digital radio, VHF marine radio, sluice control systems and meteorological stations.
