We are seeking to recruit a new Support Worker to join our highly regarded Virtual School as soon as possible.

This post is full time, 37 hours per week including school holidays. It is fixed term for one year in the first instance and secondments will be considered.

The post is based at the Dryden Centre in Low Fell, Gateshead and the post is funded by the Local Authority Virtual School (VS) working with Gateshead Looked After Children, Previously looked after children and Post 16 young people in care including care leavers.

It is essential that you have knowledge and understanding of the barriers often faced by looked after children and young people in general. You must also have; knowledge of the emotional, psychological and cognitive development of children and adolescents; experience of counselling young people; an understanding of child protection and safeguarding procedures; an understanding of the need to maintain appropriate professional boundaries whilst being approachable and supportive; the ability to communicate with young people, families and other professionals; and be able to deliver programmes that support counselling and wellbeing.

It is also essential that you have the ability to remain calm and optimistic in the face of considerable challenge. You will possess effective ICT skills (Word, Excel, database management); good organisation, planning and record keeping skills; have experience of working with children and young people in educational or social care settings; experience of working with challenging children and young people and experience of working in multi-disciplinary teams.

You will have good literacy and numeracy qualifications to at least Level 2 and hold a relevant Level 3 qualification in social care, education or in supporting children and young people. You must have access to a car with a current valid driving licence and appropriate insurance or means to mobility support.
