We have implement our Strengthening Families approach – Family Valued Programme, helping us on our journey of strengths-based practice to make sure our response to children and their families is an ethos that provides the foundations for the very best service provision.

Darlington Borough Council provide an in-house therapeutic service for care experienced children and young people, many of whom who have experienced trauma, loss and separation through neglect and abuse. We work with our colleagues in the looked after children’s team and key staff from children’s services to inform the support given to children and young people. We receive referrals into the service which will often lead to consultation with professionals and foster carers and a therapeutic assessment of need with child, followed by further support as appropriate.
We are seeking to recruit a Therapist/ Therapeutic Social Worker with a range of skills, experience and qualifications including (but not limited to) some of the following:
• Psycho-education (information about trauma responses and strategies for managing symptoms)
• Family therapy
• Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) or Trauma Focused CBT (TF-CBT)
• Therapeutic play
• Counselling (children and adolescents)
• Creative arts and therapies (i.e, sand play; story and metaphor)
• Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT)
• Dyadic Development Psychotherapy (DDP)
• Theraplay
• Neuro Linguistic Programming (NLP)
• Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR)

You will be qualified and registered with the appropriate governing body.

In addition to 1:1 and group work, you will also provide support to families and carers to help their understanding and response to their child or young person through education and support. You will also be required to work closely with social work teams and stake holders to offer consultation and support around trauma- informed practice.

An understanding of Signs of Safety / Relational Practice will be important to this role.

The service uses evidenced based Outcome Tools to show individual progress of service users. The Child Outcome Rating Scale, Session Rating Scale and Strength and Difficulties Questionnaire form the basis of these tools.

You are required to provide support to children and young people within a designated base or working from home and it is essential you can meet the travel requirements of the post.

As a qualified therapeutic practitioner/ social worker, you will be required to offer peer support and consultation within the therapeutic team and to Looked After Children social workers; residential staff and involved professionals. You will undertake complex assessments and support colleagues in case formulation.

You will need to be able to work independently as a Therapeutic Social Worker, so will need to be able to be experienced in this specialist field. Clinical supervision will be provided.
