What will I be doing?
We have a very successful apprenticeship programme in our Transport Division and this position will offer high quality on site job training to the successful candidates.
You will:
• Work within a team of Highway Operatives to carry out maintenance and new construction duties.
• Use and maintain necessary tools and equipment in accordance with applicable codes of practice.
• Assist in numerous basic tasks in relation to highway operational duties e.g. laying paving, kerbstones, installing concrete, tarmac, and drainage.
• Comply with relevant health & safety legislation.
• Develop skills in setting out, reading, and understanding site plans.
• Assist with maintain a clean and tidy work environment, following Supervisor/Mentor instructions at all times.
• Attend periodic learner reviews.
• Attend all training relevant to the post.
• Assist in maintaining a health, safe and secure environment and to act in accordance with the Council policies and procedures.
• Promote and implement the Council’s equal opportunities policies in all aspects of employment and service delivery.
• Develop knowledge of relevant handheld software.

What will I need?
We are looking for someone with a positive attitude who is self-motivated, ambitious reliable and hard-working. You will need good communication skills and show good attention to detail. You will be required to work in a physical and demanding environment in all weathers. You will be required to attend training essential to your role. You will require an awareness of health and safety in relation to the work place. You will also need new grade A-E (or 9-2) or equivalent in Maths, English.

What will I receive in return?
We’ll support you to learn new skills, and to thrive in your role, undertaking an NVQ Level 2 qualification in Highway Construction. The role is full time (37 hours per week) for a fixed term of 2 years. At Newcastle City Council our apprentices are paid a percentage of the salary for the role the apprentice is working towards. This is always at least National Minimum Wage and increases each year as you develop your knowledge and skills.

This apprenticeship role is working towards the full role of Roadworker Grade N5, with a starting salary of £26,873. The apprenticeship rate will be paid as a percentage of the starting salary, or National Minimum Wage (whichever is greater)

Whilst we are unable to guarantee a post in the role apprentices work towards, all our apprentices are supported to apply for suitable vacancies when they complete their apprenticeship so that they can make use of their new skills and qualifications.
