Start Date ASAP - Temporary Post until 31st March 2018

Across the country, councils need to reduce the amount of waste that is thrown away and increase the amount that is reused, recycled and composted.

The average household produces around 1 tonne of waste every year and in County Durham we produce around 240,000 tonnes of household waste every year.

In April 2012, we introduced a new collection scheme to improve the way rubbish and recycling is collected from households across the County. This scheme works well across County Durham as residents can recycle paper, card, plastics and cans in a blue lidded wheeled bin and glass bottles and jars within a kerbside box. Last year in County Durham we recycled almost 40% of household waste.

As part of a countywide education campaign to inform residents about the kerbside recycling service and which materials can or cannot be recycled, we require an enthusiastic individual to join our experienced Recycling Assistant to support the Direct Services Strategic Waste and Operational teams within the Council.

The successful candidate will be required to provide advice to the public through a series of door knocking and monitoring activities and by delivering countywide promotional events including school assemblies and community talks. They will also be required to assist the collection crew with checking for the wrong items in recycling bins and applying stickers to bins to notify the resident that material that can’t be recycled is present.

Staff should preferably have an interest in the environment, in particular waste prevention and recycling. Waste related knowledge would be an advantage although training will be provided.

Candidates should be customer focussed, friendly, excellent communicators with the ability to talk to residents face to face to educate and answer questions about the service. Excellent organisational skills are also required.

The postholder will also be required to work outside of normal working hours, including weekends and evenings as required.

Qualifications: 5 GCSE’s (A – C grade) or equivalent.

Interviews are to be held on a date to be confirmed.
