Further Information

In the North East of England and part of the wider Tees Valley sub-region, Darlington is a world class location that offers a great place to live and work.  Darlington has outstanding assets of excellent transport links (Teesside International Airport, Darlington Station that is served by the East Coast Main Line and Trans-Pennine services and the A1/A66 strategic road network), high achieving schools, good quality residential areas and a fantastic quality of life.

Due to retirement an exciting opportunity has arisen for a Director of Public Health.

The role sits within the People directorate, is part of the Council’s Chief Officer Board and is the principal advisor on all public health matters to elected members, officers and partners.

With a strong vision for the Borough that is focussed on reducing inequalities and making Darlington a healthier place to live and work, our Director of Public Health is fundamental to driving success, through leadership of our innovative and passionate Public Health team.

You’ll be ambitious for ensuring good health and wellbeing outcomes for our borough, with energy and passion to achieve.  An experienced senior manager, with a demonstrable track record of delivering improvements and results, you will be supported by colleagues within the people group and wider council who recognise that public health is important to everything we do.

We strive together to empower communities to take action for themselves, through robust partnerships and relationships that are grounded in mutual trust.

Whilst the role is based at Darlington Town Hall, at Darlington we are working in an agile way with the flexibility to manage your diary to work between the Town Hall and from home as demand requires. There is a potential for a relocation package to be available.

The rewards for working at the Council will go way beyond the salary you will receive, with numerous additional benefits including 32 days annual leave plus bank holidays (with the option to purchase additional annual leave), access to the Local Government Pension Scheme with option to make additional voluntary contributions, flexi time scheme, green car leasing scheme, generous maternity, paternity and adoption leave schemes, physiotherapy and counselling services, a great wellbeing offer, and local and national retailer discounts.

For the full range of benefits we offer, and further information about us and what it’s like to work for our great team, visit our Jobs and Careers home page www.darlington.gov.uk/jobs-and-careers.

Closing date for applications is midnight on Wednesday 1st November 2023.

Interviews for shortlisted candidates will take place on 16th November 2023 at the Town Hall, Darlington.
