ABOUT THRIVE AT FIVE

Thrive at Five’s vision is a society where every child can thrive and achieve their potential. Our mission is to help children in their early years develop strong foundations for life and learning. Focusing on some of the UK’s most disadvantaged communities, our place-based model support’s positive development from pregnancy to five. We achieve sustainable change by unlocking the power of parents and carers and enabling collaboration to strengthen early years systems.

Why do we need Thrive at Five:

Parents and carers, and their children, often struggle because the system of support around them is fragmented. Strategies for support are sometimes developed in a piecemeal fashion, without sufficient reference to what the evidence and data (including, critically, the views of parents) tell us about needs and how best to address them. The result is that the support can be ineffective (as a gap grows between services and the community) and, often, too short term. We do things to families rather than doing things with them, and so fail to harness the power of parents and communities.

Currently, it is nobody’s job to join-up early years support in disadvantaged neighbourhoods and to foster stronger links between services and the community. Building on the lessons from other initiatives, Thrive at Five seeks to address these issues with a long-term and sustainable solution.

Thrive at Five’s Approach:

Our approach combines two strategic drivers:

• Unlocking the power of parents and carers to give their children the nurturing care and supportive environments they need.

• Enabling collaborative action within and across the public, private and voluntary sectors to coordinate and strengthen early years systems, practices, and pathways of support from pregnancy to the end of the first year at school.

Underpinning our approach is the focus put on building and strengthening trusted relationships between communities and services which is critical to aligning agendas and engaging parents with the support they need.

We start by helping our partner organisations to look at their data to understand what children and families need and to find things that are working well. Capturing the views of parents and carers is essential. We use this information to codesign and implement solutions, delivered by a range of local stakeholders, which will improve the provision of support.

We also support a range of activities to reach and engage parents to increase their knowledge and skills and encourage them to seek support when they need it. We are committed to reach all parents, particularly those who do not engage with services and support and whose voices are seldom heard.

Together with our partners we also find ways to strengthen the system and upskill the early years workforce. All our work incorporates processes to monitor and refine implementation, to ensure the support offered is responsive to and embedded within local contexts. Ongoing evaluation is delivered by our external evaluators and our internal Learning and Impact team.

Putting the approach into practice:

Thrive at Five ensures the collective effort of our partners simultaneously targets and improves five intermediate outcomes, all of which are stepping stones towards children developing strong foundations for life and learning. Every workstream is considered with sustainability, scale, and our Theory of Change in mind.

The Five Intermediate outcomes underpinning our work are.

i) Children’s early Communication and Language Development

ii) Attachment and Parenting Responsiveness

iii) Levels of Parental Wellbeing

iv) The quality of children’s early Home Learning Environments

v) The quality of Early Education and Care
