We are seeking to appoint an enthusiastic individual who is passionate about the health of people in Durham, to join our Public Health team as a Public Health Advanced Practitioner.

We are appointing one full time equivalent post (available as full time/part time/job share).

We are looking for a candidate with a track record of implementing public health programmes in a range of settings, and with exceptional communication skills and ability to progress public health priorities through leadership at all levels of the system.

Public Health Advanced Practitioners play a key role in forging partnerships with and influencing all key stakeholders within their specialist area of responsibility. They will also be responsible for key elements of the Council’s public health vision and strategic plan, developing, implementing, monitoring and leading key public health programmes to reduce health inequalities and improve health and wellbeing. This will be delivered through the commissioning process and marketplace development with providers including other Local Authorities, the NHS (commissioners, providers in the acute, mental health and primary care), the third sector and independent/private sector.

The Public Health Advanced Practitioner will play a key role in forging partnerships with and influencing all key stakeholders within their specialist area of responsibility (Durham University). This will ensure the widest possible participation in the public health agenda to support the development and delivery of strategic University and council objectives. They will also promote the continual use of County Durham’s Approach to Wellbeing.

This post will be seconded to Durham University and sit within the Student Support and Wellbeing Team, professional support and oversight will be provided to the postholder by the Public Health Team at Durham County Council.


Key areas of responsibility will include (but are not limited to):

Supporting the delivery, evaluation and evolution of the new Durham University Health and Wellbeing Strategy, specifically to:

• develop collaboration and sustained engagement between Durham University, Public Health and the local health and wellbeing system in County Durham to deliver support and resources;
• investigate and advise on evidence-based, sector-leading best practice in student health and wellbeing;
• contribute to the development of the student Mental Health agenda across the University including:
o leading on the application for University Mental Health Charter;
o in partnership with the Counselling Service, support the ongoing delivery of mental health training for staff and students;
o facilitate a greater understanding of the causes of mental health difficulty amongst the student body and identify appropriate actions in response.
• develop and implement a new University Drugs Policy and associated education programme for students;
• refresh the Student Alcohol Awareness and Use Policy;
• enable co-produced initiatives and campaigns in particular areas of need highlighted by our Health Needs Assessments such as alcohol and substance use, lack of sleep, sexual health, stress, and healthy eating;
• explore the delivery of accessible health and well-being services for students on campus including vaccination clinics, sexual health services, drug and alcohol advice service, and GP provision;
• identify opportunities to report and publicise the work of the University around health and wellbeing;
• update and develop the University's Health Needs Assessments.

Required Qualifications:
• Master’s Degree in Public Health, Health Promotion or a related field (or working towards MPH)
• A relevant degree, supplemented by public health improvement knowledge, acquired through training, courses and experience.
• Evidence of continuing professional development
