Further Information
“This is Redcar and Cleveland. We are an ambitious council keen to build on our strong track record of innovation and partnership working, ensuring that we create a flourishing future for the borough and all of its residents. Key to this is a committed workforce who always gives their best. Offering a fast paced, progressive working environment, Redcar and Cleveland Borough Council is a great career move.”

This post is based at the centre of the council in the Resources Directorate which has key responsibility for managing the council’s money and people as well as ensuring that democratic decisions are well informed and legally sound.

An exciting opportunity has arisen for two experienced and enthusiastic Welfare Rights Officers to be part of the Council’s Welfare Right’s service. The successful applicants will contribute to the delivery of a specialist Welfare Rights service to residents of Redcar & Cleveland.

The Welfare Rights Team provides free, independent and confidential advice and information about all Social Security Benefits and Tax Credits. Its aim is to support the residents of Redcar & Cleveland through the provision of advice, casework, representation, campaigning, information and training.

It is essential that applicants have excellent knowledge of social security and tax credit legislation and recent experience of providing benefit advice and information as well as experience of representing/advocating on behalf of others. Experience of delivering training/presentations is also essential. A general knowledge in other areas of social welfare, relevant to benefit and debt advice provision in the borough, would be desirable. Candidates will be expected to demonstrate excellent communication, networking and organisational skills and will be expected to manage a caseload with an ability to work under pressure. Part of the job role will involve travelling to service locations, resident’s domestic dwellings and appeal/training venues. An ability to travel and access to a mode of transport is essential.

Applicants will be shortlisted on the 24th and 25th September with interviews expected to take place on the 27th and 28th September. Please note that a short test forms part of the interview process.

The Council is an accredited Investors in People employer at gold level and holds ambassador status for the North East Better Health at Work Award.

We offer attractive terms and conditions of employment, including generous annual leave entitlement, flexible working hours, membership of the Local Government Pension Scheme and access to numerous other salary sacrifice schemes and staff benefits/discounts, including a lease car scheme.
