This is a high profile role. You will be expected to build up an extensive understanding of the issues and challenges in your local area, lead on identifying mainstream voices and providing support to groups countering extremism in all its forms. You will need to have excellent communication and influencing skills and will be expected to represent the council at various internal and external meetings, working closely with the local community, senior council officers and elected councillors, as well as central Government.

The post holder will be expected to:

The post holder will develop understanding of the drivers, prevalence and wider harms of extremism in Newcastle and the impact they have on community cohesion.

The post holder will use experience and knowledge to identify and build relationships with individuals and groups in Newcastle who are doing important work to build stronger and more resilient communities and/or counter extremism.

The post holder will support individuals and groups in identifying what help they require to consolidate and expand their reach, including by signposting them to, and helping them submit high quality bids for, grants and in-kind support.

You will have a good understanding of what constitutes cohesion, violent and non-violent extremism. Knowledge of how extremism and threats to cohesion can manifest in communities, and the range of interventions that can create stronger communities.

You must demonstrate experience of community engagement, in particular, of working with community groups

You will be part of a network of Coordinators based in England and Wales who share learning with one another and will additionally contribute to the Local Government Association led ‘Special Interest Group for Countering Extremism’ who are developing tools and guidance for local authorities on countering extremism.
