The Bishop Auckland HAZ is a partnership project which includes Durham County Council, Historic England, members of the Brighter Bishop Auckland Regeneration Partnership and others. Working within and drawing on the expertise of a wider multi-disciplinary team, the HAZ Project Manager will work closely with partners and stakeholders, including the local community, businesses and owners.

The HAZ has been established to promote heritage-inspired growth in areas currently in decline, and to complement other initiatives in the town to bring about lasting change. The HAZ is seeking to breathe new life into the historic town centre, which has great potential as a visitor destination in the context of ongoing major invest at Auckland Castle and Park.

Main Duties
The Project Manager will develop, co-ordinate and implement the programme set out in the HAZ Delivery Plan over the 5 year delivery period. They will raise awareness and understanding of the role of heritage supporting regeneration, and co-ordinate the successful delivery of a range of projects delivering tangible outputs.

Based in the Council’s Regeneration and Development Team, you will work closely with colleagues from across the Council and Historic England, as well as the wider HAZ partners. You will need an ability to operate strategically, identify links, work across a wide range of sectors, and deal with partners and stakeholders across all levels of responsibility. You will need excellent communication and negotiation skills, with the ability to be particularly effective at building and strengthening partnerships, engaging and influencing the wider community, co-ordinating community based activities and events, and promoting the HAZ initiative, the area’s heritage and its role in regeneration. You will report progress on a regular basis to the HAZ Advisory Group and the Brighter Bishop Auckland Regeneration Partnership Board.

Applicants should be educated to degree standard or equivalent in an appropriate architectural, planning, urban design or project management discipline, together with holding substantial post qualification experience in programme or project management work. The interview process will be managed by Durham County Council in partnership with Historic England.
