Sunderland City Council’s Planning and Regeneration Service is seeking a Project Manager for a fixed term post until 13th August 2022 to co-ordinate an ambitious programme of projects for Sunderland’s Historic High Streets Heritage Action Zone (HAZ), working closely with partners and stakeholders, including the local community, businesses and owners.

Sunderland’s HAZ is a partnership project which includes Sunderland City Council, Historic England, Tyne and Wear Building Preservation Trust, The Churches Conservation Trust, Sunderland Heritage Forum and Sunderland Culture. The HAZ has been established to promote heritage-inspired growth in areas currently in decline, and to complement other initiatives in the area to bring about lasting change. The HAZ is a 5 year project that commenced in 2017 and is reviving the historic areas around the high streets of Old Sunderland, once the commercial heart of the City and containing some of its oldest and most important buildings.

Main Duties
The Project Manager will develop and co-ordinate the 5-year programme set out in the HAZ Delivery Plan, raise awareness and understanding of the role of heritage supporting regeneration, and co-ordinate the successful delivery of a range of projects. The post will require someone with the clear ability to operate strategically, identify links, work across a wide range of sectors, and deal with partners and stakeholders across all levels of responsibility.

The post holder will be educated to degree level or equivalent and be expected to be able to manage a variety of projects delivering tangible outputs. The post holder will be required to have excellent communication and negotiation skills, with the ability to be particularly effective at building and strengthening partnerships, engaging and influencing the wider community, co-ordinating community based activities and events, and promoting the HAZ initiative, the area’s heritage and its role in regeneration.

Based in the Council’s Regeneration Team the post holder will work closely with colleagues in Conservation, Regeneration, Cultural Heritage and Community Services and officers from Historic England’s Historic Places, Research, Heritage-at-Risk and Local Engagement Teams. The interview process will be managed by Sunderland City Council in partnership with Historic England.
The post is full time for a fixed term until 13th August 2022.
