Further Information
“This is Redcar and Cleveland. We are an ambitious council keen to build on our strong track record of innovation and partnership working, ensuring that we create a flourishing future for the borough and all of its residents. Key to this is a committed workforce who always gives their best. Offering a fast paced, progressive working environment, Redcar and Cleveland Borough Council is a great career move.”

The Adults & Communities Directorate consists of four strands, Adult Social Care, Community Development, Public Health and Environment. Our aims are to continue to provide essential and highly valued services and to build capacity to enable local communities to make lasting change, improve quality of life and prosperity. As a directorate we lead on developing a culture of co-operation and co-production, respecting and nurturing the skills and talents of local people and enabling them to fulfil their potential.

River Tees Port Health Authority (RTPHA) represents the four riparian authorities of Redcar and Cleveland Borough Council, Stockton-on-Tees Borough Council, Middlesbrough Borough Council and Hartlepool Borough Council. The Port Health service is managed by Redcar and Cleveland Council and sits within the Environmental Health (Commercial) Team.

The role of Port Health is to ensure that food and feed entering the UK through Tees Port has been legally imported and complies with relevant food and feed laws. The port currently has DPE (Designated Point of Entry), DPI (Designated Point of Import), and FPI (First Point of Introduction) status, and is in the process of applying for applying to be a Border Control Post for Products of Animal Origin. We are committed to providing quality services to people, who live, work and visit the Tees Valley and support the development of a fair and equitable trading environment that protects the interests of consumers and businesses alike.

You must be a Member of the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons (MRCVS) and ideally have completed the portal OVS practical training.

The successful candidate will be expected to carry out Official Controls on Products of Animal Origin from both third countries and the EU, as well as responding to requests for advice and providing guidance and support to importers, and other relevant agencies and stakeholders.

You must be able to work effectively as part of a team and prioritise and manage personal workloads. Due to the nature of the post and the port operating 24/7, you will be required to work occasional evenings and weekends as the workload demands.

The council holds ambassador status for the North East Better Health at Work Award.

We offer very attractive terms and conditions of employment, including generous annual leave entitlement, flexible working hours (where appropriate), membership of the Local Government Pension Scheme and access to numerous other salary sacrifice schemes and staff benefits/discounts, including a lease car scheme.
