Nexus - Living in the area

Tyne and Wear is on the North East coast and is named for its two main rivers and bound by Northumberland and County Durham. The region comprises North Tyneside, South Tyneside, Gateshead and the cities of Newcastle upon Tyne and Sunderland.

The area has a rich heritage and many places of historical interest, including Hadrian’s Wall which ends in Tyne and Wear, Tynemouth Castle and Priory, Newcastle Keep and Hylton Castle.

You’ll recognise many of the local landmarks, including the Angel of the North, the Sage Gateshead, Penshaw Monument and the seven bridges of the Tyne. And the long sandy beaches and coastal attractions are never far away.

Like all bustling urban areas, there are many cultural attractions with art galleries, theatres and museums, a vibrant evening economy and retail therapy options to suit all tastes and budgets.

Tyne and Wear is a popular area for students, with the universities of Newcastle, Sunderland and Northumbria welcoming thousands of students to the region every year.
