Further information

The Health, Safety and Risk team is a small professional unit which supports Hartlepool Borough Council (HBC), schools and external clients e.g. GP surgeries in all matters of health, safety and risk.

We are now looking for an exceptional health and safety professional to lead the team in the next phase of service development. With an established track record in improving health and safety outcomes and highly developed interpersonal and negotiation skills, the right candidate will bring the right balance to initiate change and make an impact in Hartlepool.

Reporting to the Assistant Director - Corporate Services, and working closely with Elected Members, Trade Unions, Chief Officers, staff and external organisations and partners, it is a high profile position which carries a great deal of leadership responsibility. Your main role will be to lead on all aspects of health and safety matters across the council, schools and external clients. You will act as the Competent Person for the council on health and safety matters and ensure the council complies with all statutory obligations.

You will oversee an effective Health and Safety Management System, including developing and reviewing policies, procedures and systems to ensure that risk is identified, managed and improved upon. You will make sure that Chief Officers and Members are cited regularly on the key issues affecting the authority. You will be a change maker in respect of organisational responses to health and safety and management of risk and will support the council, schools and external clients to deliver good practice in respect of health and safety.

You will hold a relevant degree or diploma in Occupational Health and Safety (or equivalent) and will have chartered membership of the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health (or equivalent). A fire risk assessors certificate and management certificate would be desirable. You will also have experience of working with a range of agencies at a senior level.
