Further Information
Looking to kick-start a career in Civil Engineering and earn a qualification at the same time? This could be the perfect first step.

Sunderland City Council is proud of its strong commitment to apprenticeships and training. As a Civil Engineering Apprentice, you’ll be supported every step of the way, gaining real-world experience while developing the skills you need to build a successful career in the industry.

You’ll work alongside experienced engineers, getting hands-on experience on live projects while studying towards a Level 3 Civil Engineering Technician qualification, delivered on-site by New College Durham. It’s a fantastic opportunity to learn, grow and make a real impact.

What you’ll be doing
No two days are the same. During your apprenticeship, you’ll be involved in a wide range of activities, including:
- Supporting colleagues in the design and delivery of highways, structures, flooding and coastal schemes
- Helping to prepare plans, drawings and technical documents
- Managing day-to-day correspondence linked to civil engineering projects
- Assisting with feasibility studies and option appraisals for potential traffic schemes
- Carrying out site surveys such as speed surveys and traffic counts
- Following a structured apprenticeship programme to achieve a professional Civil Engineering qualification

What we’re looking for
You don’t need years of experience — just the right attitude and an interest in engineering. We’re looking for someone who:
- Is well organised and able to prioritise tasks
- Is comfortable using computers and learning new systems
- Enjoys problem-solving and thinking things through
- Can spot potential risks or errors and take a logical approach
- Communicates clearly and confidently
- Works well as part of a team and uses their initiative
- Pays attention to detail and works methodically
- Has a positive attitude and is keen to learn and engage with their studies
- Can build strong working relationships with a wide range of people
Has a genuine interest in developing a career in Civil Engineering

What we offer
In return, you’ll receive fantastic support and development opportunities, including:
- A structured apprenticeship programme with full support from a trained assessor
- A dedicated workplace mentor to guide and support you throughout
- Encouragement from a friendly, knowledgeable and supportive team
- Access to a wide range of learning and development opportunities
- A benefits package designed to support your wellbeing — at work and beyond
