Sunderland City Council is to make appointments to a pool of persons from which it will draw individuals to serve as members of its Independent Remuneration Panel (the Panel).

The role of the Panel is to prepare recommendations on the Council’s members’ allowances scheme and the nature and level of allowances to be paid to councillors and co-optees. The Council must have regard to these recommendations when reviewing or amending its scheme.

The Panel may also be asked to review and make recommendations on the allowances scheme for the Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Authority (the Fire Authority).

The Panel typically meets on 2 to 4 occasions each year, with meetings usually taking place during normal office hours. It is proposed that individuals be appointed to the pool for a term of up to 4 years, which may be renewed on expiry.

A small allowance is paid to Panel members when they have undertaken a review and made recommendations.

You are not eligible for appointment if you
• have been a member or officer of the Council or Fire Authority within the last 5 years.
• are a close friend or relative of any member, co-opted member or officer of the Council or Fire Authority.
• have close business or professional links with the Council or Fire Authority or other relationship which may give rise to a conflict of interest
• are politically active
• are disqualified from being a councillor.
