Here in Sunderland we are diversifying how we help and support people who become homeless. We have realigned the Housing Options Team to ensure the team is well placed to meet the needs of all people who are street homeless and those threatened with homelessness. We will work to ensure that all move to and sustain independent living.

For many this journey is not a straight line, therefore we have increased the team and have added more diverse roles to ensure people are supported at every stage of their journey to a safe and secure home. You will note we are recruiting into many new posts and this is a great time to join a cohesive team who always support each other.

This post is exempt from the rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974 and therefore will be subject to a DBS check from the Disclosure and Barring Service.

As an Initial Assessment Officer, you will be the on the front line of the Housing Options Team, being the first point of contact for people who are homeless or threatened with homelessness. You will be responsible for gathering information to determine eligibility and cause of homelessness.

The successful applicant will have a good degree of empathy, be able to listen and communicate effectively in some difficult conversations as well as possessing good negotiation skills. A basic understanding of the homeless reduction act and related legislation would be advantageous. The role also requires working with multiple external agencies therefore the ability to maintain excellent relationships with a wide variety of partners is required.

Please note this role will require working as part of a rota to cover the Homelessness Out of Hours Service.
