Sunderland Welfare Rights Service is a specialist casework service offering advice and representation in relation to benefits, debt and employment on behalf of Sunderland City Council.

We work collaboratively with a range of other providers including our commissioned first tier advice-providers.

The service currently has a vacancy for an experienced Welfare Rights Officer who can join this busy team and ‘hit the ground running’ however additional support and training will also be available.

The postholder will work in a focused way to provide specialist IAG and representation to residents in the West of the city, to the SLA of a specific project funded by the West Area Committee.

The post will also create capacity in the specialist Welfare Rights Team by carrying a working caseload covering the rest of the city.

The successful candidate should have extensive knowledge of providing advice in relation to Welfare Benefits, Debt and Employment up to and including representing clients at Social Security Hearings Employment Tribunals and County Court (including debt and eviction proceedings).

This post employs agile working; from home and partner location (in line with Covid legislation and SCC policies).

This post is exempt from the rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974 and therefore will be subject to a DBS check from the Disclosure and Barring Service.
