All our young people to become Happy, Independent Learners who are Prepared for Adulthood

Epinay Business & Enterprise School is an outstanding special school currently providing around 270 places to pupils from KS1 to KS5.  Our pupils have significant learning difficulties and/or diagnosed learning disabilities who are working significantly below age related expectations. Many experience barriers in cognition, processing, literacy, numeracy and communication which require highly specialised teaching approaches.

All pupils have Education, Health and Care Plans (EHCPs) and benefit from personalised learning programmes, specialist teaching approaches and a holistic, multi-disciplinary model to education. In addition to their learning needs, pupils may have some social communication differences, speech and language needs, sensory processing differences and a diagnosis of Autism. Some pupils may also present with social vulnerability and require targeted support to develop independence and resilience.

We are committed to providing a structured, nurturing and aspirational environment where every pupil is valued and enabled to achieve their full potential.

At our state of the art school, we create a safe and inclusive centre of excellence. We are committed to providing a stimulating environment where learners are supported to achieve challenging and aspirational outcomes in order to develop as happy, confident and independent learners who are prepared for adulthood.

Make a Lasting Impact Outside the Classroom
Epinay School is seeking a resilient, compassionate, dedicated and proactive Pastoral & Behaviour Worker to act as our first response in improving student attendance, emotional regulation and behaviour outcomes across the school.

In this non-classroom-based role, you will work directly with our pupils, families and multi-agency teams to dismantle barriers to education, support mental health and nurture positive relationships.

We are looking for a calm, self-motivated individual who thrives under pressure and brings an empathetic, non-judgmental approach to supporting children with complex needs.

How you will make a difference:
  • De-escalation & Crisis Support: Provide immediate, hands-on intervention for students experiencing dysregulation or emotional distress.
  • Attendance & Home-School Liaison: Drive attendance initiatives, track data, conduct home visits and co-create bespoke action plans for hard-to-reach families.
  • Positive Behaviour Strategy: Help staff implement individualised behaviour plans, risk assessments and restorative practice after incidents.
  • Multi-Agency & Safeguarding Collaboration: Work closely with outside agencies (mental health, social care), support the Designated Safeguarding Lead (DSL) team and chair targeted EHCP reviews.

We are looking for someone who has:
  • Proven experience supporting young people with special educational needs & disabilities (SEND), social, emotional and mental health needs and implementing behaviour management strategies.
  • Understanding of complex mental health needs, de-escalation techniques and attendance protocols.
  • Practical experience working directly with families, monitoring absence and driving positive attendance throughout the school.
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to navigate delicate situations with empathy and authority.
  • Excellent interpersonal and de-escalation skills and be able to handle challenging situations calmly and professionally.
  • Strong organisational and record-keeping skills, with the ability to work independently, meet deadlines and collaborate effectively.

This new and exciting role offers the opportunity to make a lasting impact and transform lives beyond the classroom by building meaningful partnerships with parents, carers and the wider community to help every family thrive

The school is committed to investing in our staff and developing expertise in specialist SEND practice. We offer high quality CPD opportunities on a regular basis and opportunities to work alongside and learn from therapists and other multi disciplinary professionals. You will have access to accredited training where appropriate and regular instructional coaching and processional dialogue. There are also opportunities to contribute to whole school improvement.

Applicants will be expected to show they have researched the school, its designation, cohort groups, specialist provision groups and relevant policies.

We strongly recommend visiting the school. To arrange a visit or for further information, please contact Sandra Stephenson (Head’s PA) on (0191) 489 8949 or email sstephenson5@epinay.org

Epinay School and South Tyneside Council are committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children, young people and vulnerable adults.  We expect all staff and volunteers to share this commitment and an Enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) disclosure will be sought along with other relevant pre-employment checks.

In line with the guidance in Keeping Children Safe in Education, schools may carry out an online search as part of their due diligence on shortlisted candidates.
